VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
Teaching young people business and entrepreneurial skills.
Young people who have dropped out of school at an early age or who are living without the support of a parent or guardian, face huge challenges as they grow into adulthood. They must find ways to earn an income, and without the local infrastructure or enterprise to help them, they can become extremely vulnerable very quickly.
Together with 11 of our partners across Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda, we run our Vocational Training Program to teach vulnerable teenagers skills that they can use to earn a reliable and sustainable income. We do this by:
PROVIDING
on-the-job training in the likes of carpentry, tailoring, mechanics and hairdressing through local artisans or training colleges.
TEACHING
finance, marketing and business skills to help them to set-up and manage their own business.
GIVING
each graduate a start-up tool kit and materials for their business.
EQUIPPING
each graduate with extra materials and tools for them to train another vulnerable teenager in their new skill.
ENCOURAGING
graduates to join one of our Village Investors Program (VIP) groups to enable them to save money and grow their business.
“I was a laughing stock in the village and people thought I would remain a failure for the rest of my life. But, with the skills I have gained, I am going to be an inspiration to my peers both in Kids’ Club and in the community.”
Samson now runs his own tailoring business in Bunabuka, Malawi.
THE IMPACT
Graduates have much stronger employment opportunities and have the ability to earn a sustainable income.
Their standard of living improves as they can afford to improve their homes and invest in livestock.
They create a ripple effect of hope as they pass on their skills to other young people and can pay for their siblings to go to school.
OUR REACH
To date, through our Vocational Training Program, we have provided 5,952 vulnerable young people with on-the-job training in the likes of carpentry, tailoring, hairdressing and mechanics, and teaching them business, marketing and finance skills.
